Porscha Mercedes, I, Michelle Martin and Victoria Parker at the Miss Big and Beautiful pageant at U4ia on September 30th.

Cleveland's U4ia was the place to be for the Miss Gay Ohio National Pageant on September 16, with Denise Russell holding emcee duties. Current titleholder Tommy Ross performed throughout the show, imitating Diana Ross and Billie Holiday. She is a definite must see! Ginger Manchester entertained with several numbers, but the best thing was her tip-receptacle headpiece. She should have it patented and sell it at pageants. A great idea... it keeps all your tips handy! I have noticed lately that the big thing is to tip your good, good friends about ten $1 bills, but tape them together so they roll out when the performer takes the first dollar. This, however, can only be done if you're a good friend or if you're in the top five of that person's speed dial.
The evening's categories were Creative Costuming, Evening Wear, Talent and Interview. Entrants were Sashay Lorenz, Sondra Randall, Jessica Michaels, Deception, Rusty Fernandez, and Ashley West (a"simple country boy"-her words).
Talent proved to be better than usual. Jessica Michaels had a huge radio on stage with her and was on top of it doing "On the Radio"-how'd you guess? My only thought was how the hell she got it there--this thing was huge. Rusty Fernandez did her Charo imitation flawlessly. I could have sworn it was her. Deception also tore the crowd up. This, needless to say, was a very tough competition, however only one person took home the crown.
I did notice this night that I was the only one in the room who still had their original eyebrows intact. I think I'll create fake brows to sell to these girls for when they're out of drag. Speaking of "out of drag," MTM (Melissa, Twiggy and Mark) were there, also Jennifer Phillips, Kari Nickels and a few others. Kimberly Adrian, where are you girl?
Ashley West won the competition, with Rusty Fernandez first runner up.
Congrats go to U4ia for celebrating its fifth anniversary on September 18, with titleholders Miss U4ia Jennifer Phillips and Mr. U4ia Damon entertaining with some of Cleveland's finest.
The Interbelt in Akron will be changing locations as of the first of the year, moving to somewhere on Market Street. Rumor is the club will have air-conditioning...oooh baby, it's about time, Vern.
Paige Turner walked off with Miss LorainSandusky USA crown, well, she won it! Maddie Sinclair, the current titleholder, ended her reign. No further details here--I heard it through the rumor mill.
U4ia hosted the Miss Big and Beautiful pageant on September 30, with the everpopular Melissa Ross serving as emcee. Melissa also opened the show with an amazing performance to Gloria Estefan's new version of "Turn the Beat Around." She was a vision of color, hair and energy.
The current Miss Big and Beautiful Ohio, Carla Visconte, gave up her crown this night with incredible performances and never looked better (not saying that she ever looked bad). Other performers for the night were: Dene Matthews, Renee (of K & K Productions), Dana Mills, Erica Martinez, and Jacqueline Rhodes.
The definite highlight of the show was Renee and Roger, dressed as Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog, lip-syncing to their heliumbreathing version of "Endless Love." The crowd loved it! An honorable mention goes to Victoria Parker, who had a black floorlength gown with the red AIDS awareness ribbon serving as the collar. It was incredible looking.
The contestants were Veronica Vale, Felecia Fairchild, Victoria Parker, Deception, Chase Manhattan, Anastasia, Petrice Douglas, Michelle Martin, and Porscha Mercedes. This pageant ran just shy of the four-hour mark: No-Doz need to be passed out-not that I wasn't having a good time.
Michelle Martin took the crown, with Porsche Mercedes and Victoria Parker as first and second runners-up. Category winners were Deception, for evening gown; Veronica Vale, for congeniality; Porsche Mercedes, for interview; and Michelle Martin, for presentation and day-wear. ✓
